6 quick reasons why you should choose Mailfence over Countermail

  • Custom domains come with all paid plans, and you do not have to buy them separately. Countermail offers custom domains and charges a $15 one-time setup fee. In fact, in order to get a domain option with Countermail, you first have to subscribe to their premium subscription and pay the one-time setup fee to get a domain option.
  • Mailfence offers the ability to create white label customizations. We can create a fully customizable Mailfence experience tailored to your needs. At the time of writing, Countermail does not offer such an option.
  • Integrated features in one interface. Mailfence offers a Calendar, Documents (Drive), Polls, Encrypted chat, Groups, and Contacts. With all these features you can safely collaborate with anyone, the days that you had to subscribe to a separate service provider for each and every service are over. At the time of writing, Countermail offers a calendar, XMPP chat, and an address book.
  • Mailfence gives you the option to share your mailbox. This option will help you collaborate even further with friends or colleagues. Currently, Countermail does not offer such an option. Learn more about shared mailboxes in our dedicated post.
  • Mailfence has 5 different subscriptions available to satisfy the needs of every user. Namely, these subscriptions are Free, Base, Entry, Pro and Ultra. You can test our service with our free subscription and upgrade to one of our paid plans whenever. Presently, Countermail only offers a premium subscription for 6, 12 or 24 months and a 7-day trial subscription to test their services.
  • To register for Countermail you need an invite code from an existing user

We are confident that we have the most complete and yet most affordable subscriptions on the market. Compared with Countermail that offers only a premium subscription with just 4 GB of storage at $4,92/Month for a 1-year subscription, we believe we definitely win the battle of the most well-rounded subscriptions. You can check our subscriptions in the image below.

Moreover, our Entry subscription costs €3.50/month and offers significantly more features than Countermail’s one and only premium subscription. Such features include 10 GB of storage, 30 GB of storage for your Documents, many aliases, and improved customer support. We also offer discounts for long-term and loyal users. It should be noted, that Countermail offers discounts if you buy more than 5 premium subscriptions and not for long-term usage as we do. What’s more, we donate 15% of all the revenues of the Pro & Ultra subscriptions.

Encryption made easy

Countermail uses the same encryption protocol we use, the OpenPGP. Both Mailfence and Countermail offer end-to-end encryption and digital signatures. However, what really sets Mailfence apart is the fact that it has an integrated keystore that gives you total freedom. Encryption has existed for many years, however the reason why it has not been adopted by many individuals is that it is difficult to get into. Mailfence wants to change that and make encryption easy to use for everyone. Countermail’s keystore offers some basic functionalities, such as the ability to create a public key, attach it and show a warning when a public key is not found for a recipient. Below you can find the complete overview of what our keystore is capable of.

Our keystore offers the ability to generate a revocation certificate, manage multiple keys, verify the authenticity of a public key, access your keypairs from any device, modify expiration dates and revoke keypairs. You can manage your keys, by logging in to your Mailfence account, then by clicking Settings -> Encryption.

Giving credit where it’s due

Mailfence is all about transparency, we promote healthy competition, and we are not writing this comparison to undermine Countermail. Mailfence offers two-factor authentication (2FA) which boosts the security of your account. However, we do have to commend Countermail for taking it a step further.

Countermail gives you the ability to sign in to your email via a USB-dongle, meaning if someone were to learn the password login of your account he/she wouldn’t be able to get access to the account without the dongle. Mailfence has plans to give a USB-dongle to users to improve the security of the 2FA, stay tuned because Mailfence has a quite few surprises in-store for 2020.
