Mailfence attended the Internet Freedom Festival (IFF) in April 2019. This blogpost will provide you a brief run-down of our overall experience with regards to the event. Our team engaged with a number of data privacy/security-conscious users, academics, journalists and digital rights activists at IFF 2019. Mailfence is a secure and private email-suite that provides users full control over their data. The IFF 2019 team and attendees appreciated the presence of Mailfence at the 5th year event of IFF and found it to be a useful and important tool in this age of data surveillance.

Expo tables activity

Mailfence was part of the Expo tables at the third day of IFF 2019 event. We engaged with a number of data privacy and security enthusiasts, academics and professionals, lawyers and digital rights activists. We successfully introduced Mailfence to all the visitors of our activity table, and addressed all of their questions.

Moreover, we were glad to also welcome existing users of Mailfence who visited our activity table and shared with us their valuable and positive feedback.

I have been a user for a few years and I completely love your service.

Feedback from one of our existing user.

All of the comments/feedback/remarks were thoroughly noted and gathered in our internal community feedback notes which we use to improve our service.

Tool showcase activity

Mailfence was also part of the Tool showcase activity at the fourth day of IFF 2019 event. The specified activity format included groups of IFF 2019 participants visiting each booth in rounds. The booth members were then supposed to introduce their service/application to the participants and provide a small demo.

Our Team member introduced Mailfence and demonstrated end-to-end encryption and digital signature functions on Mailfence web-interface. A small demo of Calendars, Documents, Contacts and Groups was also provided. All groups of IFF 2019 participants showed great interest and shared their valuable feedback. We also asked participants about the common issues they face while using OpenPGP, and addressed how such issues can be solved using Mailfence easy-to-use OpenPGP functionality.

Engagement with IFF 2019 participants

Mailfence team members also attended various IFF 2019 sessions. This allowed us to broadly listen, learn, and contribute to the conversations that happened at IFF 2019. Following is a list of some the attended sessions:

  • Encrypting the Internet: Obstacles to TLS Deployment
  • Closing the Gap: How ESNI and Encrypted DNS Will Help End Internet Surveillance
  • Creative Comms: Novel Tools for Communicating
  • Privacy Web Docs
  • Cryptorave: Together we stand, divided we fall

This provided us insights on the present tech issues revolving around data privacy/security tech, journalism and digital rights activism. Likewise, we were happy to share our knowledge, experience and feedback with the participants. We also met some privacy/security conscious service providers and discussed several collaboration possibilities.

Parting thoughts regarding Mailfence at IFF 2019

IFF 2019 proved to be a significant event that provided us an opportunity to engage with the Internet Freedom community. Following are some of our parting thoughts:

  • IFF 2019 was a large and diverse gathering of extremely interesting digital rights activists. We would like to extend our thanks to the event organizers who made it a reality. We found that we shared a lot of values with regards to online privacy and digital freedom. Our team is eager to continue to engage with the IFF community, in order to drive the many important issues regarding tech, policy and activism.
  • Having a place to meet and exchange with everyone interested in internet freedom is of vital importance. IFF is this place, offering a unique mix of a conference and a festival. IFF brings together a multi-disciplinary mix of fascinating people from all across the world.
